All about Jeeps

Jeep became a part of DaimlerChrysler after the merger of Chrysler Corp. with Daimler-Benz and now is one of the subsidaries of the company. It is now becoming a genericized trademark like many others which was not always the case as it was not much popular earlier. It was mainly used earlier by the military as a name of their vehicles the Willys-overland, Bantam BRC during the period of WW II. Jeep can be credited for the advancement of vehicles into SUVs as it used to resemble them in the earliy 80's.

The term Jeep was initially used like a slang for tractor which are used for carrying of heavy equipments. After the completion of first jeep model it was taken out for testing though there was no name assigned till that time. The soldiers present in that camp termed this project as Jeep but the engineers thought the word was familiar with Eugene the Jeep character and hence they credited that character. These jeeps were built mostly for the American army which includes the first Bantam BRC and followed by two prototypes by Willy-overland and Ford. It was the first company which had successfully fulfilled the extentive creteria given by the american army with its technical know-how and hard work.

The trademark for Jeep is held by DaimlerChrysler with the 7 slot front grilled design which is now considered as the standard design for all type of those vehicles. Ford has earlier made a 9 slot grill design but since the 7 slot grill is lighter in weight it has been made the standardized design for jeeps.
